Birthday Plant

It was Petra’s birthday on Thursday, so to celebrate, I made her a potted palm!

Petra stands behind a potted palm, smiling at the camera with her hands behind her back. She wears a peach pinafore dress with a cream-and-white striped top. The palm reaches her shoulders, and is in a terracotta pot.

It’s probably one of the best-looking plants I’ve ever made.

The palm stands in its pot in front of a parquet backdrop. The plant has five stems with five leaves, varying in height and leaf floppiness.

I used a template and the instructions from 50 Makes for Modern Miniatures by Chelsea Andersson, which were invaluable!

The palm stands in its pot in front of the book '50 Makes for Modern Miniatures' by Chelsea Andersson. The cover of the book has a bedroom scene, with bed, bedside table, wall hanging, rug, and plant. This is all in shades of peach, cream, yellow and white.

I used ripped-up packaging for soil, to cover the coiled felt I wedged these stems into. There is also wire down the centre of each leaf, to give that oh-so-elegant curve.

The lighter green detail down the centre of the leaves adds so much dimension – definitely something I’ll remember for the future.

The book’s projects are all in a smaller scale than Petra and her friends are; I thought the scale of the leaf was okay, so I just made the stems of the palms longer.

Petra stands in front of a parquet background, next to her potted palm. She supports one of the leaves with her hand from beneath, and she looks down at this leaf. With her pinafore and shirt, she has brown boots.

It’s perhaps not quite as tall as regular palms; maybe it’s a baby palm, still growing up! Petra will definitely enjoy encouraging it to grow. In future, I might add one or two extra leaves in the centre, just to fill it out a bit. There are a couple of other plants in this book, so I’m hoping to get around to making them before I have to return it to the library.

Anyways, see ya!
