Blue Coaster

Do you ever feel the need, upon acquiring new furniture, to make something to use with it so it becomes part of your space? Might just be something I do.

Either way, the house has a new side table, so I decided to make a coaster to use on the table.

A flatlay of a small square of fabric, getting navy bias binding pinned around its edges. The binding twirls into the top right corner and disappears from frame. The square is surrounded on the other sides by embroidery scissors, a pin tin, a spool of grey thread, and some triangular fabric scraps.

Of course, I used some of my blue fabric scraps.

Close-up of the completed square. This side is made of two triangles of fabric, which are sewn together diagonally across the centre. The bottom triangle is a blue floral print, soft pink flowers and green leaves. The top triangle has a more geometric, fan-esque blue design. It has navy bias binding around the edge.

I wanted to have a ‘lighter’ side and a ‘darker’ side, to make maximum use of a variety of scraps.

Close-up of the other side of the coaster. It has a similar diagonal design, and navy bias binding around the edge. These two fabrics are both darker; one is a denim blue with small white flowers, the other is small yellow stars against a navy background.

As a result, the light side looks quite bold with the navy binding.

The idea is to use the coaster to hold cups of tea when I’m sitting in the chair beside it.

The coaster sits on a small round side table, along with a small white lamp and an embroidery hoop. The hoop's design is half-stitched, and the instructions, scissors, thread, and needles are also strewn across the surface.

I have also used it for scissors, though, so it’s versatile.

The coaster is on the small side table, with the lamp and a crochet project. The project is mid-row; the hook is resting nearby along with the ball of yarn.

It is a little small for the base of the mug I usually use; I didn’t accomodate for the width of the binding when I was cutting out my squares. It still works, though, and I’m still happy with it.

Anyways, see ya!
