Midsummer/winter Ornaments

I come to you, on this here summer/winter solstice, with Christmas ornaments. (Which feels strange, to me at least.) These ornaments came from a tutorial by Jenni Davis in Love Embroidery magazine, issue 44.

Three felt embroidered Christmas ornaments are laid flat on a wood surface. Beside them is a small tablet, with an image of similar felt ornaments from a magazine on the screen. The ornaments and the tablet are surrounded by scattered gold and red seed beads, and gold sequins.

I cannot emphasise enough how sparkly these are; I tried to capture something of it in the hot summer sunlight at about midday.

The three felt ornaments are laid flat on grass in the sun, photographed from above. Some of the sequins sewn onto the ornaments are sparkling in the sunlight.

I did my best to use supplies I already had for these; most of what I purchased were things I can use in the future for other projects. (And I definitely want to use the seed beads!)

One of the ornaments, photographed up close. It is a long oval shape, with pointed ends. It's separated into five sections; the top and bottom-most sections are red, with vertical embroidered lines and gold sequins. The middle section is light brown, with an embroidered pattern like a plush leather seat, and sequins and beads sewn on where the lines cross. The final two sections are bands with an embroidered line across the centre, and gold seed beads along each side. One band is cream, the other is dark green. The ornament has a yellow loop of ribbon at the top to hang it.

I love the embroidery in the centre of this long one; it’s like those fancy leather seats you see, but even sparklier.

Another ornament, photographed on a wood surface up close. This one is circular, made of dark brown felt. It has four stars layered on top of each other. The bottom star is six-pointed and red; three points have sequins sewn on, and three have gold seed beads. The next star is dark green and six-pointed, and has radiating lines embroidered onto it. The next star is cream, and four-pointed, with seed beads sewn on near the base of each point. The final star is light brown, and four-pointed; it has a sequin sewn in the middle, and similar seed beads to the other four-pointed star. The ornament has a yellow loop of ribbon sewn to the top.

With all the embroidery and beads in these, all three took me about a week to make.

The third ornament is photographed up close on a wood surface. It is oval-ish, tapering to points at the top and bottom, and is dark green. In the centre is an eight-pointed red star, with a sequin sewn to the centre. Behind it is an oval-ish shape in cream, heavily embroidered with stem-and-leaf shapes, and heavily sequinned and beaded. The gap between the cream shape and the edge of the green shape is beaded with small, tubular, dirty gold beads, radiating out from the centre. At the top is a yellow loop of ribbon.

I think this one’s my favourite, don’t tell the others!

The three ornaments hang from the branches of a small, leafy shrub at various heights. Sunlight dapples the leaves in the background.

I’d love to make a couple more of the fat pointy oval one (on the right, above) – I reckon it’d look nice in some dark purples and pinks and suchlike. Or even with more of a contrasting colour for the embroidery!

Anyways, see ya!
