Brace Your Hand

Keen-eyed readers may have noticed Sarah has been absent from here for a while. Well, that is because about a year ago, one of her hands fell off.

Close-up shot of Sarah's right hand, separate from her body, on a white brick background.

I tried re-attaching it with superglue, which lasted about five seconds. I tried reattaching it by melting the plastic in her arm with a wire I was then going to bend around the joint in her hand; that did not get past the melting-the-plastic stage.

Last week, however, I came up with this idea:

Close-up of Sarah's right arm as she's holding it in front of her torso. A black tube of knit fabric encases the arm from her elbow to her knuckles. She's wearing a pale blue playsuit, and is standing against a white brick background.

I sewed a small tube of leftover black knit fabric into a tube and cut a little hole in it, so Sarah now has an “wrist/arm brace”.

Another close-up of Sarah's right arm, however this time the inside is visible. It remains encased in the black knit tube, and the thumbhole is more visible.

So far, it has worked! I’m unsure how much weight her new wrist can support, but the joint is very flexible. And of course, if the brace comes off, so does her hand.

Sarah holds Chip, a circular, BB-8-esque silver android in her arms as it elevates its head to her face. Sarah's face is slightly turned away.

We shall see how this goes – hopefully she doesn’t need any more “braces”! And hey, at least it wasn’t her dominant hand.

Anyways, see ya!

Yves
