Gingham Skirt

To kick off this summer’s Adventures in Skirtland, I’ve made this simple gathered skirt in a lovely black checked linen.

The author stands against a fence and a bougainvillea bush, photographed from the waist down. She wears a long black gingham skirt with a pale purple shirt and white shoes. She is facing the camera with her hands on her hips.

The pattern is self-drafted following instructions from one of my sewing magazines. It was a really simple pattern, actually – four rectangles and four of my tried-and-true gigantic pocket pieces.

The author stands in front of a fence and a bougainvillea bush, photographed from the waist down. She wears the same gingham skirt, shirt and shoes from before. Her body is angled slightly away from the camera, and she has her hands in the skirt's side seam pockets.

I kept the hem nice and long, so it is on the longer end of ‘midi’. I can always take it up sometime in the future, if I want to.

The author stands in front of the bougainvillea hedge, wearing the gingham skirt. She faces the camera, holding the skirt out a bit with one hand.

I also thought the construction was very clever – the back is gathered separately to the front with elastic, making it an elasticated waistband.

Close-up of the author's waist, from the side. The solid front of the skirt's waistband is visible, as is the gathered, elasticated back of the waistband. The author's pale purple shirt is tucked into the skirt.

It is incredibly comfortable!

The author stands against the bougainvillea bush, wearing the gingham skirt. The skirt is blowing against her legs, and she has one foot pointing to the right, as if she's about to walk that direction. Her hands hang at her sides, and she's holding a bouquet of fake pink flowers in one hand.

I’d definitely make another one, but I’m not sure what colour. Definitely in a plain colour; maybe brown? Brown goes with a lot of colours.

Anyways, see ya!
