2023 Year in Review

It’s that time of year again! I can’t believe it’s nearly 2024.

January:

Sarah stands outside Whesan Post, looking through the window. She has a blue floral jumpsuit on, and carries her brown satchel. Chip the android rolls on ahead of her.

February:

Petra sits in a terracotta garden ornament, designed to look like a crumbling classical Italian or Greek balcony. She has one hand in her lap, the other resting on the rail, and is looking up at the vines and leaves surrounding her.

March:

Sarah and Tiffany are in the Sit and Stitch area of Needle & Thread. Sarah sits on the couch, hot drink on the coffee table in front of her, looking up at Tiffany. Tiff is standing in front of the armchair, hot drink in hand, about to sit down.

April:

The interior of the travel sewing kit is face up. At the top is a buttonhole; below that is a strip of navy felt with four buttons sewn to it. Below that is a rectangle of navy felt on the left with safety pins and needles in, and on the right a small navy pocket with a tape measure in. At the bottom is a big pocket with scissors and white and black thread in. This pocket is navy paisley patterned.

May:

The author poses in front of a white lattice screen, which has greren vines growing through it. Her hands are clasped in front of her and all her weight on one leg. She wears a midi-length dress with three-quarter sleeves, an elastic waistband, and gold buttons up the centre of the bodice. The fabric is black with small white, green, pink, and yellow leaves all over.

June:

The author stands in front of a bougainvillea bush, wearing a pink waistcoat with a navy button-up shirt. She fully faces the camera, and has her hands on her hips. She is photographed from neck to thighs.

July:

Sarah is mostly seated on a brown woven latticed chair, hands on the armrests as she lowers herself in. She's smiling as Chip the android watches on. Also visible in the scene is the desk, the corkboard above, and the bookshelf.

August:

20 fabric hexagons are arranged on a wood surface in a circular fashion. All the hexagons are patterned in shades of pink, green, blue, and purple. There are stripes, florals, nautical prints, spots, and batik-dyed fabrics.

September:

Sarah leans forward from where she's sitting on her bed to smile at Chip. Chip is near the foot of the bed, which is in the foreground of the image. They are looking very closely at the bedspread, which has a plain navy underside.

October:

The author stands against a pale blue wall, photographed from shoulders to thighs. She wears a pale purple, V-necked linen shirt tucked into pale grey pants. She has her arms outstretched and a hip jutting out playfully.

November:

Sarah sits on the side of her bed, wearing a checked shirt with pink corduroy shorts. She is placing a book on a small, square bedside table, next to the unlit candle that is already there. The table is made of dark wood, has a drawer underneath the top surface, and an additional shelf near the bottom of the legs.

December:

Tiffany stands outside Needle & Thread, holding a wreath in her hands. She has a headband with a small Christmas tree on it, and looks towards Petra with a smile. Petra walks towards Tiff from Tea at Yaz's, hands in pockets. She's wearing a grey long-sleeved top with a wreath embroidered on the front. Needle & Thread, and Tea at Yaz's have Christmas garlands over their windows. The lamppost in the foreground has red tinsel wrapped around it.

What a year! My goals last year were to renovate the miniature world, make myself some shirts, and improve my photography. I did purchase a reflector during the year, which I think has helped my photos to look a bit less dark. I managed to renovate Needle & Thread, and Sarah’s bedroom, both of which now look amazing! I also made myself some shirts, and some other stuff besides!

Renovating Needle & Thread and Sarah’s bedroom rally made it obvious how my miniature-making skills have improved, which I’m very happy with. My builds are more detailed, and more structurally sound. I’m also very pleased with how my handmade wardrobe is expanding – I’ve made dresses that I enjoy wearing! And dipped my toes into drafting patterns!

Next year, I think I want to continue renovating the miniature world (Tea at Yaz’s needs a facelift!), try making some button-down shirts for myself, and keep improving my photography. I want to dig out the reflector more often, big and unwieldy as it is! (Or make the most of good lighting, when it comes by.)

See you in 2024 – I’m ready to get stuck into it all!

Yves
