Op-Shop Upcycle #3

So way back in August last year, I purchased four button-up shirts from the op shop (or thrift store) and set about modifying them to be comfy home shirts for winter.

A chambray blue button-down shirt hangs from a hanger on a hook on a white background. It has white buttons, and two pockets on the chest.

This was the last shirt to be upcycled, because I wasn’t sure how to attack the visible contrasting stitching (and it was getting hot).

The author wears the chambray blue shirt outside, with a hedge as her background. She has a hand on her hip and the other held in front of her. The shirt has had the front sewn closed, the collar removed, the hem taken up, and the sleeves shortened.

Turns out, once you realise it’s a home shirt, so only the neighbours (and the entire internet) will ever see it, you can plunge ahead with thread that matches as close as possible.

The author wears the chambray shirt outside, with a hedge as her background. The shirt is tucked into khaki pants, and her hands are in her pockets.

I sewed the front button plackets shut most of the way up, shortened the sleeves, took the hem up a bit, and cut the collar off. Mostly matching thread looks alright, I reckon!

Close-up of the collar of the chambray shirt, laid flat on a wood surface. The tags have been removed and replaced with a ribbon hanging loop, and a small square patch in the same material. The collar has been cut off the stand, and any loose threads have been removed.

I also added a hanging loop, and had to patch a bit that I ripped taking the tags off.

Similar close-up of the collar of the shirt, against a wood background. The front two buttons have been buttoned with burnished metal buttons. The sleeve cuffs have been folded up into shot, and button with matching metal buttons.

Finally, I replaced those awfully bright white buttons with these lovely metal ones from Etsy.

Four folded button-up shirts have been arranged on a wood surface in a loose arc. The far left shirt is the chambray one; next along is a blue and copper striped shirt, next is a black shirt with small white lines all over, and last is a blue and white checkd shirt.

Looking at this photo of all four shirts together, it’s just occured to me that I never posted that blue and copper striped one, second from the left. Oops! I’ll rectify that once it gets a bit cooler, I think.

Anyways, see ya!
