Mending Holes with Moths

My handmade pants get a lot of wear, and this dark grey pair have been going strong for three years now. Last wash, however, I came across this little hole.

A closeup of the pockets of the author's dark grey pants, laid flat on a wood surface. A small circular hole has opened a small distance below the opening of one of the pockets, close to the side seam. It is quite obvious on the front of the pants.

It’s likely there because my phone sits in this pocket, and said phone has worn away at this spot repeatedly. This (I thought to myself) is the perfect opportunity to do a visible repair!

First thing to do to fix the hole is to stop it from fraying any further. I did that with a quick blanket stitch around the hole in grey thread of a similar shade.

A close-up of the hole near the pocket of the author's dark grey pants, laid on a wood surface. The hole has been stitched around with a blanket stitch in a similar grey thread. It looks a little bit messy; some of the pocket fabric from the inside pokes through.

Then I thought long and hard about how I wanted to cover the blanket stitching, because let’s be honest – it’s not my best work. I settled on a moth patch; moths are underrated creatures, and are often dark grey like these pants. A patch means it is removable if the embroidery gets damaged, or if I want to change it up a bit.

An embroidery on dark grey linen fabric is laid on a wood surface. It a fairly detailed depiction of a moth, done in pale brown thread. Surrounding the fabric is a sketch of the same moth design, a small embroidery hoop, some brown embroidery threads, and a pair of thread snips.

So I found a moth outline on the internet, embroidered it onto some scraps of the original fabric I kept, and then stitched it onto my pants.

The author stands against a hedge, photographed from the waist to the thigh. She wears dark grey pants, and is angled so the side seam with the hole is facing the camera. Over top of where the hole was is the moth embroidery, sewn onto the pants.

Ta-daaaaa!

Covering the hole is the moth embroidery, stitched onto the pants. The author's hand is in the pocket just above the embroidery.

I love it! I think the technique worked really well, and the area is well reinforced for further wear. The moth is beautiful, too. If any other holes develop in these pants, I can continue the moth theme as well.

Tell me about visible mending you’ve done, I’d love to hear!

Anyways, see ya!
