Miniature Snakes

Not reptilian snakes! Though the making process was certainly long and winding….

After three weeks of toiling and experimenting, I bring you…

Two miniature potted snake plants (Dracaena trifasciata) are photographed against a white brick background. The leaves are dark green with horizontal stripes and yellow edges. They are in rough terracotta pots.

…miniature snake plants! Or Dracaena trifasciata, for the plant nerds out there. (The tutorial for which came from 50 Makes for Modern Miniatures by Chelsea Andersson.)

Close-up of one of the pots. The textured surface of the pot is more visible, as well as some of the leaves close to the pot's edge.

These were quite the trial; I had problems with painting the yellow around the edges of the leaves, then some of the leaves got stuck together, and I had no idea what to do about pots.

The terracotta pots are on a paint-stained workmat, partially painted orange. The un-painted area is white and still roughly textured.

But they’re here now! On the pot topic, I’m quite pleased with these ones. They are old glue stick caps, and they’ve been covered with white paint mixed with baking powder (as you can see above). Then I’ve painted them orange, and dry-brushed some brown on to try and make them look like terracotta.

Petra holds one of the potted Dracaena in her arms, smiling at the camera. She's photographed against a white brick background, and wears a cream-striped long-sleeved shirt with a peach pinafore.

I think the baking poweder/paint disguises the glue stick’s ridges really well, and none of it has come off yet. I’ll definitely use this for the other four glue stick caps I’ve saved for plant pots.

Petra stands in the courtyard of Tea at Yaz's, standing next to the silver table. One of the Dracaena plants sits on the left-hand side of shot, next to a crochet potted plant. Petra has her hands in her pockets, looking at the plants and thinking.

Of course, Petra immediately adopted them, and they’ll probably end up living somewhere in Tea at Yaz’s.

Petra stands outside Tea at Yaz's, with Needle & Thread in the background. Underneath the front window is the other Dracaena, surrounded by two small crochet pot plants. Petra's looking down at the plants with one hand behind her neck, again deep in thought.

I do want to have some plants under the front window to bring some not-red colours to the facade. I was thinking more of a window box than a collection of pots though. And on the ground or below the windowsill? Hmmmmm……

Anyways, see ya!
