The Biggest Crochet Toy I’ve Made

So a few years ago, I watched a tv show called Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I absolutely adored it. Great narrative, fantastic characters, brilliant animation; it’s a great show.

I decided over the summer to crochet myself a sky bison (one of the awesome animals from the show), so meet Appa:

The author's arm extends into frame from the left, with a hedge in the background. She is holding a large crocheted bison-esque creature, with six legs, two grey horns, and brown markings on his forehead and back.

He is b i g – definitely the biggest crochet toy I’ve ever made! Because of his size and sourcing supplies, he took me two months from start to finish.

Back view of the toy, also in front of the hedge. The brown back markings are more visible now, and extend down the sky bison's back and tail.

The pattern I used is by MikaVD/Mikas Patterns on Ravelry, which has two size options for Appa. I went somewhere in-between the two provided sizes because I wanted to use cotton yarn.

Close-up of one of the bison's feet, on a wood surface. Three small, spherical, black toes are sewn to the front of the foot, which is cylindrical. Another foot with toes is visible in the background.

I also stuffed him with cotton fibre, which makes his head a little heavy.

Most of the pattern was easy to follow, though it doesn’t specify how much yarn you need for Appa. I used four-and-a-half balls of Fiddlesticks Finch yarn for my Appa, as a guide – you definitely need more than you think!

The author stands in front of a hedge, wearing a pale pink shirt and khaki pants. She's holding the toy under one arm, with his head pointing towards the camera. His eyes are surrounded by white, and he has a black nose and grey jaw.

I am so happy with how he turned out! He looks so good, and he’s so comfortable to hug. Sure, his arrow isn’t super symmetrical, and neither are his horns, but that adds to his handmade charm. I definitely want to crochet more big stuffed toys – it’s just a case of getting around to them!

Anyways, see ya!
