Vines to Conceal Secrets

The booth-dividing lattice is complete! Petra potted up the vines yesterday, two to a pot….

A brown lattice, framed with wood, is mounted on the back of one of Tea at Yaz's bench seats. Under the lattice are two terracotta pots, with vines growing up onto the lattice. The vines are just pale green crocheted chains/stems.

….and they grew some leaves overnight.

The brown lattice, with leafy vines climbing up it, is in place on the back of one of Tea at Yaz's booths, in Tea at Yaz's. Some of the leaves grow away from the lattice on this side. Behind the lattice is the window booth, with no-one sitting in it.

(IRL, they are crocheted vines – I sewed the stems onto the lattice with brown thread, then stitched the leaves to the stems.)

Close-up of the lattice, and the vines. The vine stems and leaves are crocheted in pale green yarn, emerging from the terracotta pots. On this side, the leaves are all growing flat against the lattice.

(Under the “dirt” is coiled felt that the ends of the chains are pushed into. I glued the felt into the pots, and the “dirt” is glued on top of the felt.)

Close-up of one of the pots from above. Inside it the crocheted chain/stem disappears into dirt, or torn-up brown paper. The chain floats over the bottom border of the lattice before attaching to the lattice itself.

One of my favourite things about this is when I need to store Tea at Yaz’s, the lattice fits into the space behind the booth. The opening is on the side that (usually) faces the wall, so it’s completely invisible.

The booth the lattice attaches to is photographed from the back, which is plain dark wood. The lattice is pictured mostly slid into the space inside the back of the booth.

I cut holes for the lattice to slot into on the top, so I can also remove it if it’s blocking a photo angle.

The lattice is pictured in situ in Tea at Yaz's, at the window booth. Petra and Sarah sit in the booth, having a rapid conversation. Petra faces the camera, while Sarah is partially obscured by the lattice.

What a perfect nook for secret discussions! Or normal discussions, either works.

In the future, I’d probably add a couple more leaves, to fill out some of the barer spots. Maybe some flowers, too. The interior of Tea at Yaz’s is almost done now – I just want to add a small bookshelf near the counter (because of course). It’s looking so good!

Anyways, see ya!
