Winter Solstice Suns

First of all, happy solstice! Mine is the winter solstice, so naturally….

An assortment of sewing supplies, and an unfinished sewing project, are photographed from above on a wood surface. There are two yellow felt circles, with small lengths of ribbon, a needlebook, a card of yellow thread, and a pair of thread snips scattered around pleasingly.

….I have just finished making some sun decorations.

Two completed circular beaded sun ornaments are photographed from above on a wood surface. The suns are on blue backgrounds, and have ribbon hanging loops. Surrounding the ornaments are the supplies used to make them - yellow and orange felt scraps, ribbon, yellow and orange thread, and small gold beads.

These have been heavily inspired by Chloe Redfern Embroidery – there are some images floating around on the internet of some very old, very similar ornaments she made. (I’ve also made an Easter egg from one of her tutorials here!)

Close-up of the beading and embroidery on one of the sun decorations. The sun is a traditional circle-with-triangles design, with long yellow beads between each triangle. Groups of three small gold beads are between the long beads and the triangle tips.

I’ve adapted some of her sun designs to suit the supplies I had on hand, and I think they look really good!

The two sun ornaments hang from the branches of a bougainvillea hedge. One sun ornament has a yellow centre, and the other has an orange centre. Both have alternating yellow and orange triangles surrounding them.

Though these aren’t practical in any way, they still make me happy with all the shiny beads and bright colours.

The two sun ornaments are laid on grass, photographed from above. There is not a lot of sunlight, so the beads don't shine as much as they should.

(Not that I could get much shine and sparkle today – as expected from the winter solstice, the sun is hiding behind clouds.)

Anyways, see ya!

Yves
