No Flowers on Erid

Much like many people around March/April, I read Project Hail Mary, saw images and trailers for the movie, and became obsessed.

The author's hand emerges from left of image, holding a crocheted stuffed toy version of Rocky in frame. Crochet Rocky is pentagonal, with five legs attached to a central body, like a spider. He is brown, with khaki and green embroidery on his body. Four of his legs are identical, with a pointed cylinder connected to his body by a uniform cylinder at a right angle. One leg is made of three parts, and is slightly smaller than the others. The centre top of his body is un-embroidered and slightly raised.

This is the result of that obsession, four months later – I’ve crocheted myself a huggable Rocky.

Crochet Rocky is photographed from above on a white surface. He's standing upright, and is surrounded on three sides by the three yarns the author used to make him. The yarn balls are khaki, brown, and dark green.

I combined the book and movie designs for him, for a few reasons – book Rocky’s body was going to be easier to crochet, and I love movie Rocky’s odd, smaller leg so much.

Close-up of Rocky's smaller leg, against a white background. It has two separate lower sections that taper in opposite directions. These attach to a triangular shape at the bend, then a cylinder attaches the triangular shape to his body.

Working out how to crochet a triangular prism was definitely a challenge, but I love how the whole leg looks!

The author holds crochet Rocky against her body, with one hand underneath his body. She's wearing a blue shirt under a grey crocheted tunic.

Like Appa, I used cotton yarn and cotton stuffing to make him. Unlike Appa, he’s a little bit smaller (which my arms are thanking me for!).

Crochet Rocky is photographed in front of a tall terracotta flower pot, filled with pink petunias.

(I think he likes flowers – you probably don’t get many on Erid.)

Crochet Rocky is photographed from above, nestled in a garden bed of plants with small white flowers.

Also unlike Appa, I did write a pattern as I was making Rocky. I would like to write it up and release it here at some point, but please let me know if it is something you would like to see! If there’s interest, I’ll try and prioritise it over Lewt (my other crochet pattern that is (ahem) still in development).

Anyways, see ya!
